Introduction and background

Recently, the quality of some urban areas and their surrounding environments has seen great improvement thanks to years of sustained pollution control. However, China's environmental situation remains serious, the absolute amount of main pollutants remains huge and the trend of ecological degradation has not yet been brought under effective control. More scientific and industrial efforts are still necessary for protecting and improving China’s environment. Traditional environmental protection mode is changing from downstream and after-the-event management of the past to today's whole-process supervision and sustainable environmental engineering. Scientific research and industrial applications of novel ecologically friendly and energy saving technologies for environmental protection are needed in China. Therefore,The first Sino-Danish Conference on Sustainable Environmental Engineering, organized by College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University and Department of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), provides a communication platform for Chinese and Danish environmental researchers and scientists.
